NAPILI, MAUI -Grammy
nominated Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar send their heartfelt
congratulations to Tia Carrere and Daniel Ho, who won
the Best Hawaiian Music Album at this year’s 51st Grammy Awards for
their duet album 'Ikena, produced by Daniel Ho, [Daniel Ho
Creations]. Daniel Ho Creations also produced their nominated CD
The Spirit of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar, with producers
George Kahumoku, Jr., Dennis Kamakahi, Daniel Ho,
Paul Konwiser and Wayne Wong.
“Congratulations to Tia,
a tremendously talented, gracious, yet humble artist, very deserving
of this great honor! Congratulations also to our close friend
Daniel, a multi-talented musician on uke, guitar, piano, percussion,
and an accomplished composer, arranger, and producer. We are very
happy for our friends,” stated George and Nancy Kahumoku on Sunday
night.
George Kahumoku, Jr. and
his talented group of ‘Masters’ had quite a whirlwind Grammy weekend
in Southern California. On Saturday, February 7th, they performed to
a packed house of over 400, with fans spilling out into the small
balconies at the Manhattan Beach Community Church concert. Nancy
Kahumoku, describing the event, said the artists on their nominated
CD treated the enthusiastic audience to an amazing performance.
The afternoon concert,
opened with George Kahumoku Jr., Norton Buffalo, and Daniel Ho
playing Lokomaika’i /Amazing Grace. The 11 artists switched in and
out of the 6 spots on the stage throughout the concert. A guest hula
dancer performed and was joined in one dance by Peter deAquino. “And
there was great improvisation!” stated Nancy Kahumoku. At the
finale, Peter was leading Uwehe Omi and Slide in a lively rendition
that got a standing ovation, which was the resounding “Hana Hou”
heard after they performed Hawaii Aloha.
The performers included
Dennis Kamakahi, George Kahumoku Jr, Daniel Ho,
Bobby Ingano, Owana Salazar, Keoki Kahumoku,
Richard Ho’opi’i, Sonny Lim, Norton Buffalo,
Peter deAquino, and Sterling Seaton. And, stopping by to
listen and wish them well was slack key master Jeff Peterson.
Norton Buffalo, is a big time blues harp player and rock n’ roller
as well who will be on Maui February 28th with the Steve Miller Band
at the MACC.
George Kahumoku, Jr. and
his talented Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar enjoyed their
three-day trip – the concert and the 51st Grammy Awards, and will be
winging their way back to Maui tomorrow.
Fans can greet them on
their return to Kahului on Monday, February 9th, at 1:25 pm on
American Airlines flight 253, or join them as they return to host
their weekly concert series, now in its fifth successful year at
Napili Kai Beach Resort every Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
This week’s Wednesday
concert on February 11th, 7:30 p.m., will feature fellow Grammy
nominee, Ledward Kaapana, nominated for his album, Force of
Nature, who also is just returning from the LA Grammy Awards.
