Next Generation... Da 'Ukulele
Boyz
regularly performing in the Slack Key Show most
weeks.
DA
'UKULELE BOYZ represent the future as the next generation of
performers upholding the traditions and culture of Hawaii musicians.
First cousins Peter deAquino and Garrett Probst first
began playing together as a team competing in Keoki Kahumoku's Maui
Ukulele Contest held annually at the Hula Grill. Their killer duet
instrumental songs, their vocals and relaxed stage banter, gave them
multiple victories for several years until they took over management
of the contest themselves. Energetic, talented, and charismatic,
they, and Sterling Seaton, co-host with Uncle George Kahumoku,
The Slack Key Show – Masters of Hawaiian Music, located at the
Napili Kai Beach Resort's Aloha Pavilion.
Sterling
Seaton
Born and raised on Maui, Sterling showed an interest in the guitar
as a youth. In high school, Sterling would practice in between
classes and to jam with Uncle George Kahumoku at lunch time. After
attending Uncle George's Annual Summer Workshop in Napili and
studying with the slack key masters, Sterling took a particular
interest in Cyril Pahinui's Slack Key C. He started at our show as a
stagehand then graduated to sound engineer and now he performs here
weekly. Sterling is also working on a solo CD. Sterling's guitar is
featured on Grammy award winning CDs, Treasures of Hawaiian
Slack Key Guitar, Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key
Guitar, vol.2, and Grammy nominated Spirit of Hawaiian
Slack Key Guitar.
Peter
deAquino
Peter deAquino was born and raised on the island of Maui. He began
playing ukulele at the age of 6. Later he began learning ukulele
with Keoki Kahumoku, and Herb Ohta Jr. Other influences include all
the masters of Hawaiian Slack Key guitar; Bradda IZ, Bob Marley, and
Hawaii musicians that come before and still to come. Now this
talented young professional plays solo and in groups all over Maui
including George Kahumoku's Slack Key Show (Da Ukulele Boyz), Dukes-Kaanapali
(Three Pounds of Poi), Kimo's-Lahaina (deAquino Braddaz), The Hula
Grill (leading the band TBA). He is currently working on his first
solo album, which will be released at the end of this year. Peter is
featured on four Grammy winning compilation CDs entitled Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar, vol.1, Legends
of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar, Treasures of Hawaiian
Slack Key Guitar, Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key
Guitar, vol.2, and Grammy nominated Spirit of Hawaiian
Slack Key Guitar.
Garrett Probst & George Kahumoku Jr
Garrett Probst,
As a child Garrett demonstrated a remarkable musical ability that
quickly developed under Keoki Kahumoku and also with Herb Ohta Jr.
Garrett was given the opportunity to travel with Uncle George
Kahumoku to Ashland, Oregon and elsewhere to demonstrate his
exceptional talent. Performing as Da Ukulele Boyz for the Slack Key
Show, he also now plays professionally, at Dukes-Kaanapali (group
Three Pounds of Poi), and with his cousin Peter D's band, TBA at the
Hula Grill. Garrett is featured on three Grammy winning compilation
CDs entitled Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar, vol.1, Legends of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar, and Treasures of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar. Garrett is now
working on a solo CD.
